An important development in the postwar period is the rise of the ‘feminist literature’. A new consciousness of the peculiarity of women's outlook and social role opens up new directions for women's writing. For women writers like Doris Lessing, Muriel Spark, Angela Carter, Iris Murdoch, Margaret Drabble, Sarah Grand, Mary Cholmondely, Hillary Mantel, Michele Roberts, Joanna Trollope, Fay Weldon, and Jeanette Winterson, narrative fiction became a canvas to challenge the hegemonic practices of a gender-biased society. The concept of women merely as wife and child-bearer was abandoned. The writing of these female novelists came as a revolution that was to be perceived in the female sensitivity to the unfair or highly limited roles of women, to their restricted representation in society and its literature. They have portrayed many a woman who overcame odds and liberated herself from male and social oppression at various levels as mental, emotional, physical, social and even political. They have focused on female self definition in spite of the position they have been pushed to by patriarchy. However, contributors can think of writing on other British contemporaries too.
